Young Children's Toy Play: Linking Entertainment Media to Early Development
Speaker:
Sandra L. Calvert, Professor, Georgetown University
Children are born into and grow up immersed in a world of media. Children have favorite TV characters from an early age and these characters drive their interest across media platforms and toward certain products, including licensed toys and merchandise. In her presentation, Sandra Calvert explores ways for content producers and toy manufacturers to reach their audience. Children's access to media, their interests, and how they learn as well as parental attitudes about media will be discussed. Play, as the young child's language, will be examined as a vehicle for bringing specific toys into the home. The synergy created by the use of multiple platforms, using links among television programs, DVD's, and websites, to real-life activities is discussed as a way to maximize this process.
